About Me

I have been an Orthopaedic consultant in Cardiff since 2008. My area of specialisation is Hip and Knee Surgery.

I trained in Orthopaedic Surgery in Leeds over a six year training program. I developed an interest in Hip and Knee surgery in the early years of my training and focused in this throughout the training period. To obtain further experience I applied for, and was selected to work at the Masachusetts General Hospital, Boston, USA. This year long fellowship was part of the highly acclaimed Harvard University Orthopaedic Program and was an outstanding opportunity to enhance my clinical, research and operative abilities.

I joined as a Consultant in Cardiff and currently do over 200 hip and knee replacements every year.

My approach to hip surgery

A key feature of my clinical practice is meticulous attention to detail and emphasis on constantly improving outcomes. I believe every patient should have treatment, which is reliable, trusted and will last them as long as possible.

My surgical technique for hip replacements spares the main muscles which move the joint, hence recovery of muscle function and walking is much faster. Most people are able to get rid of crutches within 4 weeks and many are able to walk without crutches within 2 weeks of the operation.

The implants I use have been used for over 10 years and have proven, good long term track record. I do not use experimental or untested prostheses, many of which may lead to problems.

My results

My results on the National Joint Registry for hip replacements show a revision rate (failure rate) which is the lowest for any hip surgeon in Cardiff. These results are constantly updated and are available online.

Infection rate in my patients is zero. Dislocation rate is less than 1 percent.

The above graph shows the results on the National Joint Register. My results are indicated by the Green and black triangle. The red squares outside the funnel plot indicate outlying surgeons with high failure rates.

Academic work and research

I have written over 25 research papers, edited one book and written chapters in 3 international text books on topics related to hip and knee surgery.

1. I am the editor of an Orthopaedic textbook - 'Current Orthopaedic Practice' - published in September 2012. It is a multiauthor project, has over 470 pages and covers the modern management principles of Orthopaedic problems.

The book is avaiable on Amazon

2. I have written the chapter on 'Planning Revision Hip Surgery' in the book 'The Adult Hip' , which is a top reference book for Hip surgery published from the United States.

3. I am also currently editing another Orthopaedic book, due for publication in 2015.

Innovation and Improvements

I have helped in development two new instruments for knee surgery, which would improve accuracy and outcome of surgery. Further developments are planned which would expand the scope of use.

I use enhanced recovery for my patients which quickens the recovery after surgery and enables faster return to full mobility.

Training and teaching

I teach in a wide range of Orthopaedic courses and have been invited internationally to present my results.

I am Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh

I run courses in Cardiff on Joint replacement surgery, which attract candidates from around the UK and abroad.
